How
to deep fry a turkey

Want to do something really different this Thanksgiving? How about frying your turkey. It's simple -- really! There's no heating up the kitchen when you use one of those new turkey fryers to prepare this tasty treat. Available at many outdoor camping stores or mass merchants, turkey fryers have a tall narrow pot where the turkey cooks on a propane burner on a stand. Always follow the manufacturer's directions for your model, but here are the basics:
1. Season the turkey with a favorite rub or inject it with a savory marinade.
2. Fill the pot with vegetable or peanut oil and heat to approximately 350° F. If you use a filter, you can let the oil cool when you're finished and save it for frying yet another turkey. (A thermometer is usually included in the fryer package.)
3. Carefully lower the turkey into the hot oil and cook for 3 1/2 minutes per pound. Make sure the oil doesn't boil over.
4. When the turkey is completely cooked, use the turkey hook (also included in the package) to raise it out of the pot; hold it over the pot until the grease drains off.
5. Carve the turkey and get ready to enjoy meat that's moist and tender inside, and crispy (not greasy!) outside. I guarantee this: Once the gang samples a deep-fried turkey, they'll be asking for it again and again.
3 Safety Tips:
1. You must fry your turkey outdoors, so consider weather conditions.
2. Keep children and pets far away from the turkey fryer.
3. Don't leave the fryer unattended once you've added the oil.
